1. Front-Load the Planning
The single most common cause of large construction project overruns in Nigeria is inadequate planning before mobilisation. Contractors mobilise to site, start excavation, and then discover they haven't secured the imported steel supply, the structural drawings aren't fully coordinated, or the planning approval has a condition they haven't met. Every week of construction delay has a carrying cost — site establishment, supervision staff, equipment hire, and client finance charges. A project that spends 3 months on thorough pre-construction planning before touching the site typically finishes earlier and cheaper than one that mobilises immediately.

Managing these relationships requires regular, structured communication.
