Owo – Iyere Road, Ondo State

Design and supervision of road construction on the Owo–Iyere corridor in Ondo State — part of Governor Akeredolu's state-wide urban road expansion programme

Project Overview

The Owo–Iyere Road was part of Governor Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu's major urban road expansion programme for Ondo State, which delivered over 45 kilometres of roads across the state. Owo — one of Ondo State's most historically significant towns, home to the Kingdom of Owo and one of the largest palaces in Africa — required improved road infrastructure connecting its urban core to the Iyere district. Envostructs provided design and resident engineering supervision, ensuring the road was constructed to specification. The completed road forms part of the principal dual carriageway serving Owo town's northern and western expansion areas, confirmed as the Okeogun-Uka Junction–Iyere arterial corridor — the state's newly constructed two-lane dual carriageway in the Owo axis.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenges

  • Owo's hilly terrain required cut-and-fill earthworks to maintain acceptable road grades across undulating ground
  • Drainage design to manage concentrated run-off from surrounding hillsides during Ondo State's intense rainy season
  • Supervising road construction across an active urban corridor with residents and commercial activities alongside construction
  • Maintaining schedule against the state government's ambitious multi-corridor road delivery programme

Our Solutions

  • Terrain analysis and earthworks design minimizing cut-and-fill volumes while keeping grades within acceptable limits
  • Catch-drain and deep side-drain system designed to intercept hillside run-off before it reached the carriageway
  • Phased construction with alternating single-lane traffic management, allowing continuous resident and commercial access
  • Weekly site progress reviews with the Ondo State Ministry of Works PMU to ensure schedule adherence

Key Features

Full road pavement — sub-base, base course, and asphaltic concrete surface
Earthworks — cut-and-fill for grade control through hilly terrain
Concrete-lined side drains and cross-drainage structures throughout
Road markings, kerbs, and signage to state highway standards
Resident engineering supervision throughout construction
Materials testing and quality control reporting
Traffic management during construction in active urban area
Completion and as-built report to Ondo State Ministry of Works
